It should be no surprise that the mountains are a good destination for hikers. However, what we do often hear, is astonishment at just how much variety of hiking & walking there is and that there really is something for everyone. Of course there are incredible long walks far away from the crowds to deserted peaks. However, using the lift system means families (and anyone wanting an easier ride!) can get a help up the mountain for a walk high up taking in the views.

Heading up Mont Chery in Les Gets has some very accessible walking with stunning views of Mont Blanc, and the possibility to lunch over local delicacies on a terrace with a view over the Mont Blanc massif. A pretty hamlets and villages walking tour in St Jean d’Aulps will help you discover the local area. In Morzine you can check out the Nyon cascades, a stunning waterfall, or head up the Nyon lift for gentle, and less gentle walks. For more intrepid explorers the Roc d’Enfer hiking loop is a don’t miss for the craggy rock and a very exposed traverse; Mont Ouzon offers breathtaking views over lake Geneva; and the Seytroux ridges is a great full day hike well away from the crowds, with excellent views. Pick up the free walkers guide for full details of all the hiking in Morzine, Les Gets & St Jean d’Aulps.

Trail running has also been growing in popularity. Now, a dedicated site and guide exists to help you choose from one of the many signed trails. The Portes du Soleil have a free mobile app with 32 routes uploaded. If you want to test your mettle against some of the best runners, come out when the Trail des Hauts Forts is on in August. The 45km long race, also has a 25km and 10km option.

The Vallée d’Aulps also has an abundance of climbing spots with routes for all levels. Local guides are able to help you learn the skills and hire out equipment. Via Ferrata is also very popular. Halfway between climbing and walking, you’ll be attached by harness as you climb a cliff equipped with cables, ladders and steps. Graded routes are available in St Jean d’Aulps, Avoriaz and other surrounding villages.

Free guides are available to help you choose the walk, hike or run that fits your needs.
